Who is affected by the issue of good oral health?

Healthy teeth are an issue for all age groups. At the top of the list of oral diseases: Periodontitis. In Germany, for example, more than 35 million people suffer from it.

In a study, the Journal of Health Monitoring examined behavior in relation to visits to the doctor: Almost 36 percent of survey participants canceled at least one appointment for treatment or preventive care or did not show up for an examination despite having symptoms. In dentistry in particular, 15 percent of appointments were affected, which can be attributed to patient skepticism.

    What is periodontitis?

Periodontitis is a widespread inflammation of the gums caused by bacterial plaque and is so common that it has been described as a widespread disease. Everyone has these bacteria in their oral cavity, which is normal as long as they are in balance. However, if the balance is disturbed, e.g. through a lack of oral hygiene, harmful bacteria can dominate and attack the gums.

The influence of dental diseases on other illnesses

New findings show that oral health is much more than just healthy teeth. Gum inflammation can actually have an impact on other diseases, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. How exactly is this connected? High blood sugar levels can weaken the resistance of the periodontium and increase the risk of infection.

There is even evidence that oral health may be linked to dementia. Although there are still no definitive explanations here, it does show how important it is to look after your oral health.

Dental care as a precaution against dental and oral diseases

Preventive care is particularly important - because it allows serious diseases, as well as periodontitis, an inflammation of the gums, to be detected and treated quickly in the best case scenario.

Why dental care and oral health are particularly important for children

Pay attention to your children's oral health. Healthy starts in the mouth - you can also prevent other health problems.

Prevention in children is important for many reasons: children can be sensitized to the topic of oral health during childhood in order to have as few problems as possible later in life. This can be achieved by addressing the topic or brushing teeth together.

What you can do yourself to establish and maintain your oral health

It is important to take care of your oral health as it interacts with other diseases.

      Brush your teeth regularly
Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. This helps to remove plaque and bacteria that can cause tooth decay and gum disease.

      Use dental floss
Flossing helps to remove plaque and food debris from the areas between the teeth that a toothbrush cannot reach.

      Use mouthwashes
They can help reduce plaque and freshen breath. Choose a mouthwash that contains fluoride to increase protection against tooth decay.

      Healthy diet
Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals can help keep your teeth and gums healthy.

      Avoid tobacco and alcohol
These can increase the risk of oral cancer and other oral health problems.

      Drink plenty of water
Water helps keep your mouth clean and can help prevent dry mouth, which can increase the risk of cavities and other oral health problems.

      Avoid and reduce stress
Stress can lead to teeth grinding and other harmful oral habits. Stress management techniques, such as yoga, meditation or regular exercise, can help reduce these negative effects.
